What to expect
Fort Frederick guards the neck of the Trincomalee peninsula. The Portuguese finished the first fort here in 1624, and the Dutch rebuilt it from 1665; the gate you drive through is dated 1675.
The fort is still an army base, but the road through it is open to visitors on the way up to Koneswaram. Spotted deer graze between the old buildings, and grey langurs keep watch from the walls.
